Cohiba Spectre 2019 Limited Edition (10)

    $800.00 $289.98

The wrapper for the new cigar comes from Nicaragua’s Jalapa region, and the company says that during the curing process, a small percentage of upper-priming leaves were set aside for deeper aging. That led to an additional six months of fermentation, with the company saying it was able to fill just eight barrels after the selection and sorting process.

Underneath the wrapper is a Connecticut broadleaf binder and a filler that contains Brazilian mata fina and Nicaraguan tobaccos from Jalapa and Estelí, the latter two of which underwent a special finishing in Spanish Sherry barrels to elicit notes of wood and molasses.

To craft the cigar, the company turned to one rolling pair, Mr. Ruben Dario Perez Peña, who handled the bunching, and Ms. Xirolma Céspedes, who rolled the cigar, applying the wrapper and creating the head. Combined, the pair have been producing cigars for nearly five decades, with General Cigar Company noting that both are renowned for their exceptional dexterity and meticulous attention to detail.

The finished cigar measures 6 x 49, and is presented in ten-count red and silver boxes.  The company has produced just 180 boxes of the Cohiba Spectre 2019.

  • Oliva Serie V Melanio Figurado Maduro (10)

    $134.00 $104.98

The Oliva Serie V Melanio Figurado Maduro, a double-tapered, box-pressed smoke measuring 6 1/2 inches long by 52 ring gauge at its largest point, should be on the market by December.

The original version of this cigar, made with an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, scored 96 points and was named Cigar Aficionado 2014 Cigar of the Year. The new maduro version are the same dimensions as the original, but with a darker wrapper leaf grown in the San Andrés Valley of Mexico. The inside of the cigar is all Nicaraguan.

“The cigars have already been made and aged,” says Ian Blanken, director of marketing for Oliva Cigar Co. Blanken was in Nicaragua, at Oliva’s Tabolisa 1 factory where the new cigars were rolled.

The first shipment will consist of 7,000 boxes, each containing 10 cigars. “For now, it will be [limited],” Blanken says, adding that more might come later.

This is the fourth Melanio Maduro size, joining the Churchill, Robusto and Torpedo. The Oliva Serie V Melanio Maduro Churchill scored 92 points in two separate Cigar Aficionado blind tastings (2015 and 2017). The Oliva Serie V Melanio Maduro Torpedo scored 89 points in 2014.

The Melanio line is a limited-production offshoot of the Oliva Serie V. The maduro versions are made in even smaller quantities than the Melanios rolled with Ecuadorian wrappers.
